Here is a poem called "Up the Hill" by Barnacle Bill:-
UP THE HILL
Jumped from blue bus in the pouring rain,
Made my way to Whetstone Lane,
Rucksack gripped with bottle of Tizer,
Black and yellow colours of Institute Visor,
Up past Beechcroft nearing the school,
Institute's buildings come into view,
Hurry now, lest I be late,
Rushing through those green iron gates.
Above are two pictures from the B.I., including Mr Shaw teaching music in the Gym, and Mr Jerry Hall in the Upper 6th Form Room
BEECHCROFT IN WHETSTONE LANE
Former pupil Dave Garry has asked if anyone knows about Beechcroft, Whetstone Lane, Wirral. (See below). I've already advised Dave that Beechcroft was used by the B.I. for Music lessons and other activities, but if anyone knows any more, can you please let me know on the site email address below. Many thanks!
"Can you help me, please…?? I’ve got a friend, John Baxter, who was the deputy head librarian at Birkenhead . He has had a lot to do with Wilfred Owen and worked a lot with Dean recently…..helping with the interviews on the radio and the TV…and all sorts like that….
John asked me about Beechcroft…..particularly about the light coloured stone building at the rear of the building that can be seen from Whetstone Lane….He’d like to know if that or any of it is part of the original BI on Whetstone….His reason is that he ‘d like to be able to say in interviews that though the original school has been demolished, there is still a bit standing….and , of course, he doesn’t want to be guessing…..If someone can provide definite details confirming it , and it’s use , it would be a great help…John has got some information that it might have been the prep school….but I don’t recall any information about the place when I was there….so if you know of anyone who could provide confirmation , one way or the other, he and I would be very grateful…."
